In the heart of Provence, halfway between Les Baux and Arles, stands this attractive old mill built of local stone with a Roman tile roof. The hotel is situated in the little town of Fontvieille. Rooms have French country charm with excellent bathrooms. The owners offer a warm welcome to their unique 15-bedroom hotel; Jean Pierre Michel is the Michelin-star chef-patron, and his wife has created the remarkable garden that surrounds the hotel. Other members of the family help run the house, so that, for guests, it’s like staying with the Michel family. Local sightseeing throughout the whole of Provence can be arranged locally. There is no better location from which to explore Provence. Avignon is just a 30-minute drive and the hotel can meet the TGV train if necessary. The onward journey to the Riviera is only two hours.

LES BAUX-DE-PROVENCE: A unique and fascinating place perched on a mighty spur of rock high above the vineyards of Provence. The medieval town clings to the side of the mountain and leads up to the ruined castle where barons and a population of 6,000 used to lord it over the locals. The views are spectacular, and on a fine day one can see across the Camargue to the Mediterranean.

ARLES: The Romans have left a significant mark on Arles with the construction of the theater and the amphitheater. These remain Arles's main tourist attractions and they are truly magnificent examples. Vincent Van Gogh produced much of his finest work while living in Arles. The artist was not appreciated in his lifetime and was packed off to the lunatic asylum; a century later his paintings are fetching $20 million or more.

ST-REMY DE PROVENCE: St-Remy was known as Glanum in the time of the Romans, who were here in the 6th century BC. The Romans have left some wonderful remains—temples, baths, forum and houses. There is a good local market here that is well worth a visit.

LA CAMARGUE: A desolate and beautiful area of marshes and pools that attracts some wonderful birds. Sturdy black bulls and wild grey horses roam free.

LE PONT DU GARD: Astonishingly well preserved, this 2,000-year-old bridge or Roman aqueduct straddles the River Gardon over 150 feet high. The best way to see the bridge is to walk along the top.

NIMES: There are few towns anywhere that have preserved their past so well. This is one of the great Roman cities of France, with a superbly preserved miniature of the Roman Colosseum and the exquisite Maison Carrée, which Jefferson took as his model in designing the Virginia State Capitol.

AVIGNON: The main attraction here is the Palace of the Popes, where seven exiled popes took up residence in the 14th century after fleeing corruption in Rome. The palace remained the property of the popes until 1791.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE: This town was the birthplace of Paul Cézanne, and his studio is very much worth a visit as it remains just as he left it when he died in 1906. The city was a spa in the time of the Romans.

MONTPELLIER: One of the great university towns of France. The medical school here dates from the 14th century and is considered one of the best in the country.
