Situated just west of Fifth Avenue on 56th Street, The Whitby Hotel is close to Central Park, Broadway and The Museum of Modern Art. This is the latest of Firmdale’s hotels to open in New York – a midtown “grown up” sister to Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo. The Whitby exhibits Kit Kemp’s acclaimed individual sense of style, combining a colorful, carefree spirit with a sense of comfort and sophistication. Tones are more autumnal than at Crosby Street, and unique and whimsical objects pique one’s curiosity at every turn. Bedrooms are spacious with cozy corners and bookcases. Architecturally, The Whitby is unique for its terraces, which feature in six Junior Terrace Suites and also in the larger One- and Two-Bedroom Suites. The terrace of The Whitby Penthouse is stunning, with outdoor furniture and views of the Manhattan skyline. There are multiple possible combinations of connecting rooms including the three-bedroom Clementine Suite, which can be booked upon request basis only as it’s not standalone room category. This suite is the one-bedroom Clementine Suite and two Junior Terrace Suites, which make it an exclusive floor use with kitchen, on the 12th floor. The bar, which has a long pewter countertop, spills into a gorgeous orangerie restaurant that is bright in daytime with natural light. From here one passes into a cozy drawing room where the famous Firmdale “honesty bar” awaits. Kit’s personally designed china by Wedgwoood, called “Sailor’s Farewell,” features at all meals. And, of course, “High Tea will be served”. There are meeting rooms, a fully equipped gym and a 130-seat state-of-the-art screening room.
