Joanna’s Comments

GILPIN HOTEL is a wonderful Relais et Chateaux hotel in the heart of the Lake District near Lake Windermere. The hotel has been in the Cunliffe family for 27 years and is now run by Barney and Zoe, a dynamic young couple who have spared no effort in making Gilpin Hotel, arguably, the best hotel in the Lake District.   The Michelin star restaurant, Hrishi, is run by Hrishikesh Desai. Hrishikesh was the winner of the Roux Scholarship and trained with Paul Bocuse and at the French Laundry. I knew him as number two to Hywell Jones at Lucknam Park and did a cooking course with him on Indian street food! He also runs the more relaxed restaurant, Gilpin Spice, featuring pan-Asian tapas. There are 25 rooms in the main hotel, including five stand-alone Spa Lodges with hydrotherapy hot tubs and rain showers with steam. Garden Suites open directly onto the garden. More traditional rooms are located in the main house. All are superbly designed and very comfortable.

THE LAKE HOUSE is set in 100 acres on a beautiful lake about a mile from the main hotel. There is a boathouse, hot tubs and a swimming pool and spa. The Lake House has six rooms sleeping 12 people, and lends itself to exclusive use for families or small parties.   When not booked for exclusive use, it is a romantic getaway for couples wanting peace and tranquility in a unique private setting. Transport is available to and from the main hotel for dining. Breakfast is served at the Lake House.   If the spa is busy, guests at the hotel and Lake House have free passes to nearby Old England Hotel & Spa, which has a large swimming pool, ice room, gym and full spa facilities.

Sightseeing

HILL TOP: Beatrix Potter’s 17-century farmhouse, is full of her favorite things and all rooms have a photo that make reference to a ‘tale’. She purchased Hill Top from the proceeds of her first book, Tales of Peter Rabbit. Hill Top and the surrounding area inspired her for many books.

DOVE COTTAGE: was the home of William Wordsworth, one of the greatest poets of the English language. This cottage is from the 1800’s and not much has changed since that time. He moved in with his sister in 1799 and it is said this is where they had eight years of "plain living, but high thinking".

SIZERGH CASTLE & GARDENS: is a beautiful medieval house and 1,600 acre estate that includes a pond, lake and is in the National Trust. The house contains centuries-old portraits and furniture.

LEVENS HALL AND GARDENS: with original oak paneling, one of the best Spanish leather wall coverings in Europe, ornate plasterwork and fine furniture, it is one of the finest stately homes in south Cumbria. There are 10 beautiful acres of gardens to explore that include Beech hedges, a Willow maze and rose garden.

HOLKER HALL & GARDENS: is the beautiful home of Lord and Lady Cavendish that dates back to the 16th century. The home is situated in 25 acres of gardens that are part woodlands and part formal gardens. Beyond is a 200-acre parkland which goes back to Lord Cavendish planting in the 18th century.

Other Activities in the area include chauffeur-driven Land Rover tours of the Lake District, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and boat cruising on Lake Windermere. Some of the most beautiful walking and hiking in England is in the Lake District. Please ask the concierge at Gilpin Hotel and Lake House about these opportunities.
